Pip and point values are educational estimates and may differ from your broker platform. They’re based on simplified USD-quote assumptions and don’t use live exchange rates or broker-specific contract specifications. Always confirm against your platform. Not financial advice.

Knowing what a single pip is worth turns abstract price movement into real money, which is essential for sizing positions and understanding risk. This calculator gives an educational estimate of pip and point value by instrument and lot size.

When to use this tool

  • When sizing a position and you need to know the money value of your stop distance.
  • To compare how much a price move is worth across different instruments.
  • While learning how lot size and contract size affect the value of each pip.

How the calculation works

For standard forex pairs, one pip on a one standard lot position is worth roughly a fixed amount in the quote currency, scaled by your lot size. Indices and metals move in points, valued differently.

Value per pip ≈ value-per-lot × lot size
Point value (5-digit FX) ≈ pip value ÷ 10

The estimates here assume USD-quote conventions and standard contract sizes. They do not use live exchange rates or your broker’s exact contract specifications, so treat them as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Practical example

On EUR/USD, one pip on a 1.0 standard lot position is worth about $10. Trade 0.5 lots and it's about $5 per pip. So a 20-pip stop on 0.5 lots represents roughly $100 of risk — the kind of figure you'd feed into the position size calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming pip value is identical across all instruments — gold and indices behave differently from forex pairs.
  • Forgetting that pip value scales directly with lot size, so doubling your size doubles the money per pip.
  • Treating these educational estimates as exact — your broker’s contract specs and account currency can change the real figure.

Frequently asked questions

How much is one pip worth?

For most standard forex pairs, about $10 per pip on a one standard lot position, scaling with lot size. For yen pairs, metals and indices it differs. This tool gives an educational estimate per instrument.

What is the difference between a pip and a point?

A pip is the standard increment for a pair (the 4th decimal on most pairs, 2nd on yen pairs). On 5-digit brokers a point is one tenth of a pip. Indices are often quoted directly in points.

Why might these values differ from my broker?

Pip and point values are educational estimates and may differ from your broker platform. Brokers use their own contract specifications, and your account currency plus the live exchange rate affect the real value.

Does account currency change the pip value?

Yes. The underlying value is in the quote currency; converting to a non-USD account currency requires the live exchange rate, which this educational tool does not use. Always confirm on your platform.
